Vegetarian Diets for Preventing Heart Disease

By: Paul Hata

In a 1982 study of more than 10,000 vegetarians and meat eaters, British researchers found that the more meat consumed, the greater the risk of suffering a heart attack. Though eliminating meat from the diet is likely to reduce your consumption of heart-damaging fats and cholesterol, substituting large amounts of high-fat dairy products and cholesterol-rich eggs can negate the benefit.  Find

To glean the heart-saving benefits of vegetarianism, consumption of such foods as hard cheese, cream cheese, ice cream and eggs should be moderate. And the introduction of more vegetables, fruits and raw foods will definitely enhance the benefits of abstaining from eating meat.

A typical vegetarian diet closely matches expert dietary recommendations for healthy eating, being low in saturated fat and high in fibre, complex carbohydrates, and fresh fruit and vegetables. Vegetarians suffer markedly lower mortality from coronary heart disease compared to non-vegetarians.This reduced risk may be related to the lower blood cholesterol levels of vegetarians.

The Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study examined diet in relation to health in over 5,000 young adults aged 18 to 30. Vegetarians were found to have greatly improved cardiovascular fitness and a lower risk of heart disease (Slattery, 1991). A low level of meat consumption was linked to improved general health.

No matter what your reasons for eating a more vegetarian diet, there's no denying the obvious health benefits that are derived from the elimination of red meat from your diet. On average, vegetarians have lower levels of the blood fats, cholesterol and triglycerides than meat eaters of similar age and social status have.  Find out more about the effects of cholesterol in the diet and how to avoid problems caused by it at http://tlchealthandfitness.com

High levels of blood fats are associated with an increased risk of heart disease. Lacto-ovo vegetarians, those who eat eggs and dairy products, which contain cholesterol-raising saturated fats and cholesterol, have higher cholesterol levels than do vegans, as those who abstain from all animal foods are called. But even among lacto-ovo vegetarians, cholesterol levels are generally lower than they are among meat eaters.

Researchers have found that older men who eat meat six or more times a week are twice as likely to die of heart disease as those who abstain from meat. Among middle-aged men, meat eaters were four times more likely to suffer a fatal heart attack, according to the study. As for women, who are partly protected by their hormones and generally develop heart disease later in life than men do, the risk of fatal heart disease has been found to be lower only among the older vegetarians.  Find out how to avoid heart disease at tlchealthandfitness.com.

Heart Disease

The Cause of Heart Disease and
Reversing it

Heart disease is our worst enemy.  More people die from this culprit than any other disease.  What are the causes of heart attacks?  Eating much more fat and cholesterol than our bodies can utilize safely.  This results in calcification or hardening of arteries, called atherosclerosis.  This hardened substance is made of mixture of cholesterol, fat, and calcium, which when it hardens completely closes, blocking the oxygen supplied to the heart.  Find out how to avoid heart disease - visit http://tlchealthandfitness.com

The effects of World War 2 on diet change was interesting to study.  Many people had to change from the expensive meat, egg, and dairy diets to growing potatoes, grains, beans, roots, and vegetables, fresh picked, for sustenance.  The result was amazing!  The diseases from arteriosclerosis, heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, gallstones, certain cancers, and arthritis dropped drastically and quickly low.

In conclusion, the diet high in fats and cholesterol results in high amounts of cholesterol in the blood, causing heart disease.  Low fat and cholesterol diets reverse the calcification process dissolving the plaque.  There is a good cholesterol (HDL) that is needed for our systems to function correctly, and helps in reducing the bad cholesterol (LDL) in our blood, exercise also helps to lower LDL.  Sources of HDL are found in foods containing Omega 3, such as chia seeds, flax seeds, walnuts, soy products, avocado, sweet potatoes, acai berry, apples and certain other fruits.  We also need Omega 6, and 9 fats in right proportions.   I use Smart Balance Spread, but very little, to provide the proportioned amounts needed for healthy heart.  For more information visit:  http://tlcthealthandfitness.com by clicking the link above.

A study by Dr.Dean Ornish, a young cardiologist, proves that diet can cure heart disease.  He studied 50 men with "advanced heart disease" and many ready for by-pass surgery.  He divided the men into two groups and asked all of them to quit smoking and walk every day.  The first group followed a stress management program and ate less than 10 percent calories from fats with no cholesterol in a vegan vegetarian diet.
Fats should be eaten less than all nutrients. even good fats!

The "Prudent Diet" for heart disease from the American Heart Association, was given to the other group.  Fat up to 30 percent and 300 milligrams of cholesterol a day are allowed on this diet.

A year later, when the study terminated, the dangerously high LDL levels decreased by 37 percent and the hardened arteries opened by 82 percent, widening the gap letting more blood and oxygen flow to the heart for the first group.  This was proof that heart disease can be cleansed.

The second group following the "Prudent Diet" had no change. Their arteries continued to get smaller restricting blood flow even more.

We can conclude that, eating a vegetarian diet with very low fat and using the good fats listed above are best for heart health.  To learn more about fats check out by clicking the link above:  tlchealthandfitness.com and go to the nutrition and cardio pages.
